Living Things And Cells Flashcards
What 5 characteristics must all living things contain?
- Nutrition
- Movement
- Reproduction
- Excretion
- Growth
What are the 5 different types of living things?
- Plants
- Animals
- Bacteria
- Fungi
- Amoeba
What is a cell?
A cell is the smallest working unit of a living organism.
Be able to draw a diagram of an animal cell.
What is the function of the cell membrane
Holds the contents of the cell together.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Contains chromosomes which contain genes.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Suspends the cell contents
What is the function of the vacuole
Stores food and water.
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Food reacts here with oxygen to release energy (respiration).
What is the function of a ribosome?
Produces proteins.
Be able to draw a diagram of a plant cell.
Explain 1 function of chloroplast
Carries out photosynthesis.
What is the function of a cell wall?
Shape and support only.
What is the difference between plant cells and animal cells?
Plants cells:
- Cell wall present
- Large vacuole
- Chloroplast present
Animal cells:
- No cell wall
- Very small vacuole
- No chloroplast
Be able to label a diagram of a microscope.
