respiratory/gaseous exchange system (3.1.1c) Flashcards
cartilage
structural support for airways!
prevents lungs collapsing when pressure decreases during exhalation.
ciliated epithelium
moves mucus towards the throat, preventing lung infection.
goblet cells
secretes mucus in order to trap bacteria/dust.
helped by lysozyme, which digests bacteria.
elastic fibres
allows airways to strech when we inhale, and recoil when we exhale - controls air flow.
smooth muscle
controls contraction of airways and maintains diameter - controls airflow to/from alveoli.
where is cartilage found?
trachea, bronchi, and larger bronchioles.
where is ciliated epithelium found?
