osmosis/water potential (2.1.5e) Flashcards
osmosis
the movement of water molecules from high concentration (high water potential) to that of low concentration (low water potential), across a partially permeable membrane.
water potential
pressure created by water molecules when they collide with a membrane or container.
hydrostatic pressure
the pressure created by water in an enclosed system.
solute
a substance that will dissolve into a liquid.
solution
made of a solute and a solvent.
concentration
the measure of the amount of a subcomponent within a solution.
cytolysis
the bursting of an animal cell caused by increasing hydrostatic pressure as water enters by osmosis.
crenation
occurs when an animal cell is sensitive to a hypertonic solution; cell shrinks due to movement of water out.
turgor
the pressure exerted by the cell surface membrane against the cell wall in a plant cell.
turgid
when a plant intakes excess water.
plasmolysed
when the protoplasm (internal contents) of a plant cell contracts/drinks due to the loss of water in a cell.
protoplast
isolated cells produced by removing the surrounding cell walls.
