Respiratory Diseases Flashcards
What are the respiratory diseases?
COPD Tuberculosis Pneumonia Lung Cancer Seasonal Flu
What age group commonly suffers from COPD
Men: 65-74
What is COPD
Obstructive pulmonary disorder-asthma
What can cause COPD
Tobacco smoke, genetics, dust exposure, air pollution, chemical fumes.
Symptoms of COPD
Chronic cough w mucus, tight chest, heart disease, lung damage, wheezing
Treatments for COPD
Smoking cessation
Lung transplant
Oxygen therapy
What is tuberculosis
Bacterial infection
What are the risk factors of tuberculosis
Contagious, drug and alcohol abuse, travel where tuberculosis is most common, weak immune system
Swollen lymph nodes and tachycardia are symptoms for what disease
Tuberculosis
Treatments for tuberculosis
Long term antibiotics, surgery
What is pneumonia
Bacterial infection or viral infection of lungs
Causes or risk factors for pneumonia
Aspiration, exposure to infected ppl.
Symptoms for pneumonia
Diarrhea, chest pain, cough w mucus, tachycardia
Treatments for pneumonia
Over the counter meds, antibiotics, oxygen therapy
Risk factors or causes of lung cancer
Smoking (90%), air pollution, genetics
Symptoms of lung cancer
Chest pain, large mass on x Ray, weight loss, chronic infection.
Lung cancer treatments
Radiation, Chemo, surgery
What area has highest lung cancer cases
Southeast, higher air pollution, tornados or sandstorms as well
What is the seasonal flu
A viral infection, changes year to year.
Causes or risk factors of the flu
Inhaled thru droplets, age, chronic illness, pregnancy
Symptoms of flu
Congestion, dry cough, headache, fatigue, chills
Treatments for the flu
Vaccination, over the counter meds, hydration and rest
What causes cyclones in pneumonia
Germ that normally lives in the upper respiratory tract.
Why does bronchitis cause shortness of breath
Because
Your bronchial tubes deliver air from tracea to the lungs. When tubes are inflamed, mucus can build up.
Why does pneumonia use antibiotics for treatment?
Pneumonia are due to the spread of bacteria, which responds to antibiotics. Poem often develops after a person has had a different infection such as a head cold.
Why does tuberculosis use antibiotics for treatments
Treatments last at least six months because antibiotics work on,y when bacteria is actively dividing and bacteria in TB grows slow.
antibiotics only treat what??
Bacterial infections, NOT viral infections like the flu
What is decompression sickness
disorder in which nitrogen is dissolved in the blood&tissues by high pressure
which form bubbles in the body as pressure decreases.
What causes decompression sickness
caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in the bloodstream and tissues of the body.
Treatments of decompression sickness
Recompression therapy or hyperbaric chambers- restores normal blood flow and oxygen to affected tissues. Need high pressure
Symptoms decompression sickness
Dizzy, fatigue, joint pain, weakness, can’t think clear
