Accessory muscles?
Sternocleoidmastoid
Scalenes group
Pectoralis minor
Principle muscle
Diaphragm
External intercostals
Active muscles
Internal intercostals
Abdominals
Quadratus lumborum
Sternocleiomastoid
Elevates sternum
Scalenes group
Elevates upper ribs
Pectoralis Minor
Raise ribs during inspiration, expands thoracic cavity
External intercostals
Elevates ribs
Diaphragm
Dome descends, increases volume of thoracic cavity, elevates lower ribs
Internal intercostals
Pull ribs down
Abdominals
Pulls ribs down, pushes diaphragm up
Quadratus lumborum
Pulls ribs down
Trachea
Filters the air, windpipe
Process of breathing
Tracea: filters the air, branches into two bronchi, tubes that lead to lungs. Once in lungs, oxygen moved to bloodstream. Blood carries O2 where needed. RBC collect carbon dioxide and transport it back to lungs.
What happens in the alveoli
Exchange of O2 and CO2 takes place. Carbon dioxide is exhaled.
Feedback loop of the control of respiration
Increase in arterial carbon dioxide.
Low ph level.
Central chemoreceptors on medulla respond to signal.
Medullary respiratory centers
Respiratory muscles
Increase in ventilation, more carbon dioxide exhaled
Arterial carbon dioxide and ph go back to normal
