Respiratory Flashcards
Where does the maxillary sinus drain into?
Hiatus semilunaris
Where is the lingula?
Lingula is at the bottom of the superior lobe of the left lung
What structure does the left recurrent laryngeal nerve loop around?
The arch of the aorta
Which nerve passes around the right subclavian artery?
Right recurrent laryngeal nerve loops around the right subclavian artery.
Around which rib is the horizontal fissure of the lung?
Around rib 4.
5 Structures that the sternal angle indicates:
1) Carina at this level
2) T4 vertebrae level
3) Rib 2 level
4) Mediastinum is split into superior and inferior
5) Start and end of the arch of the aorta (as the arch of the aorta is in the superior mediastinum)
Which spinal nerves does the phrenic nerve arise from?
C3,4,5 (keeps the diaphragm alive)
If you swallowed a peanut which bronchus is it more likely to be stuck in? And why?
Right bronchus.
Because the right bronchus tends to be wider and more vertical.
The oblique fissure if the right lung runs between which spinous process and rib?
Between T2 and 6th rib
List the lower respiratory structures (from trachea).
Trachea - Main Bronchi - Lobar Bronchi - Segmental Branches - Terminal Bronchiole - Respiratory Bronchiole - Alveolar Ducts and Alveoli
Which type of cell is most numerous in alveoli?
Type 2 pneumocytes
What do Type 1 and Type 2 pneumocytes do?
Type 1 - Main alveolar membrane - for gas exchange
Type 2 - Produces surfactant.
What does surfactant do?
It reduces the surface tension (to increase compliance).
