Treatment for low and mod. severity CAP in children over 2 months old
amoxicillin 25mg/kg tds
for 3 days for low severity, 5-7 days mod severity
Treatment for low and mod. severity CAP in children over 2 months with non-severe penicillin allergy
cefuroxime 15mg/kg bd for 3 days
for 3 days for low severity, 5-7 days mod severity
Treatment for low severity CAP children over 2 months with severe penicillin allergy
azithromycin daily for 3 days
OR doxycyline bd for 3 days
Define mild COPD
Few symptoms
breathless on moderate exertion
Little or no effect on daily activity
Cough and sputum production
FEV1: 60-80% predicted
Define moderate COPD
Breathless walking on level ground
Increasing limitation on daily activity
Recurrent chest infections
Exacerbations requiring oral steroids and/or abx
FEV1: 40-59%
Define severe COPD
Breathless on minimal exertion
Daily activities severely curtailed
Exacerbations of increasing frequency and severity
FEV<40%
Treatment for mild-moderate COPD
SABA (salbutamol 100mcg MDI)
PLUS LAMA OR LABA
Features of legionella pneumonia
Early systemic symptoms precede respiratory. symptoms
- (high-grade fever, malaise, myalgia, headache)
Dry cough, dyspnoea
Patchy or confluent consolidation (predominantly at bases) on CXR
Pleural effusion common
Hyponatremia
