What causes pityriasis versicolor?
fungal infection. Genus malassezia
What is the treatment for pityriasis versicolor?
econazole 1% to wet skin, leave overnight, for 3 nights
OR ketoconazole 2% shampoo once daily for 5 mins then wash off, for 5 days
OR miconazole 2% shampoo topically, once daily for 10mins and wash off, for 10 days
Treatment for pityriasis versicolor that is not responding to topical treatment?
oral fluconazole 400mg as single dose
Treatment for pityriasis rosea
Usually self-limiting
severe itch is not common, can use topical steroid for itch betamethasone 0.02%cream topically once or twice daily
Treatment for shingles
Valaciclovir 1g tds for 7 days
within 72 hours of onset
Treatment for herpes
Oral: valaciclovir 1g bd
Genital: valaciclovir 500mg bd for 10 days
within 72 hours of onset for first presentation
Psoriasis treatment - trunk and limbs
coal tar 1% emulsion or gel od or bd for 1 month
IF NOT RESPONDING:
Add methylprednisolone 0.1% od until clear (2-6 wks)
Treatment for seborrhoeic dermatitis (face, flexural and scrotal)
hydrocortisone 1% + clotrimazole 1% od or bd until skin clear (up to 2 weeks)
If no improvement:
methylprednisolone 0.1% od and clotrimazole 1% bd
Psoriasis treatment - flexural inc. groin
methylprednisolone 0.1% od until clear (2-6 wks)
Causes of erythema nodosum (5 categories)
unknown trigger
Infections (chlamydia, strep or viral urti, HSV, HIV)
Drugs (OCP, NSAIDS, amoxicillin)
Inflammatory disease (IBD, sarcoidosis, malignancy)
Pregnancy
