Q

what is the first stage of aerobic respiration?

A

glycolysis is the first step in the breakdown of glucose to extract energy for cellular metabolism.

  • glycolysis occurs without oxygen in the cytoplasm. This breaks down the glucose but as the breakdown is partial only a small amount of energy is released.

Q

what is the second stage of aerobic respiration?

A

in the mitochondria with oxygen, carbon dioxide and water are produced. A large amount of energy is released as there is a complete breakdown of glucose. The energy is trapped in small molecules of ATP.

Q

what happens when energy is required?

A

when energy is required for synthesis reactions, movement (active transport) and reproduction, the ATP breaks down to release energy.

ATP ——> ADP + Pi

Q

anaerobic respiration (fermentation) - plants and yeast

A

in plants and yeast alcoholic fermentation occurs wholly in the cytoplasm without any use of oxygen.

glucose —–> ethanol + carbon dioxide
