Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
what are the seven characteristics of cells?
movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition
what are the 3 main principles of the cell theory?
- all life forms are made from one (unicellular) or more (multicellular) cells.
- cells only arise from pre-exisiting cells
- the cell is the smallest independent form of life.
what are prokaryotic cells?
prokaryotic cells are simple and small (1-10 um) cells that have no membrane bound organelles, no real nucleus and contain circular chromosomes.
prokaryotic cells / cell wall:
provides protection to for the cell
prokaryotic cells / cell membrane:
control the exit/entry of substances
prokaryotic cells / flagellum:
whip-like movement
prokaryotic cells / pili:
movement or attachment to surfaces
prokaryotic cells / nucleoid:
location of the circular DNA for inheritance
prokaryotic cells / cytoplasm:
place for chemical reactions
prokaryotic cells / ribosomes:
location of protein synthesis
prokaryotic cells / plasmid:
seperate circular DNA, helping defence
