Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
what are eukaryotic cells?
eukaryotic cells are large, complex cells that contain membrane bound organelles such as mitochondrion and chloroplasts. They have a double membrane bound nucleus and contain multiple linear chromosomes.
eukaryotic cells / cell wall (plants):
provide protection for the cell
eukaryotic cells / cell membrane:
control entry/exit of substances
eukaryotic cells / nucleus
stores genetic information for reproduction and making proteins
eukaryotic cells / cytoplasm
contains dissolved solids in gel like liquid for chemical reactions
eukaryotic cells / mitochondrion:
site of aerobic respiration
eukaryotic cells / chloroplast:
site of photosynthesis - converts light energy into chemical energy
eukaryotic cells / golji body:
packages proteins and moves them out/around the cell.
eukaryotic cells / vesicles:
carry substances such as protein out/around the cell.
eukaryotic cells / rough endoplasmic reticulum:
transport of substances, site of protein synthesis
eukaryotic cells / ribosomes:
site of protein synthesis
eukaryotic cells / smooth endoplasmic reticulum:
site of lipid (fat) synthesis
eukaryotic cells / lysosomes:
break down of wastes or defective cell organelles
what is an organelle?
an organelle is a specific structure within a cell that performs a specific function in order to ensure the cell can live productively and effectively.
