Respiration Histology Flashcards
What is the trachea?
A tough, flexible tube running from the larynx to the bronchi
From which vertebra does the trachea extend?
It extends from the sixth cervical vertebra to the fifth thoracic vertebra
Where does the trachea end?
It ends in the mediastinum at the carina
What happens to the trachea at the Carina?
It ends here and then branches into the two primary bronchi
What holds open the trachea?
C-shaped tracheal cartilages in submucosa
What type of muscle is found in the tracheal?
Smooth muscle
What type of epithelium is found in the trachea?
Ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells
List the five different parts of the Bronchus identifiable under a microscope.
Epithelium - ciliated pseudostratified columnar with goblet cells Lumen Cartilage plate Submucosa Smooth muscle - full ring
What type of epithelium is found in bronchioles?
Short columnar/tall cuboidal ciliated epithelium in a single layer
List the four parts of a bronchiole.
Lumen
Epithelium
Band of smooth muscle
Some supporting connective tissue - very thin
Name the three types of cells found in alveoli
Macrophages
Type 1 pneumocytes
Type 2 pneumocytes
Name the four identifiable parts of the trachea.
Lumen
Epithelium - ciliated pseudostratified columnar with goblet cells
Trachealis muscle
Hyaline cartilage - C shaped
What are the other two names for pneumocytes?
Alveolar cells
Septal cells
What are the spaces in the cartilage called?
Lacunae
What are the cells found in lacunae called?
Chondrocytes
