Respiration And Breathing System Flashcards
Aerobic respiration
Needs oxygen to release energy from food
Anaerobic respiration
Doesn’t need oxygen to release energy from food
How does oxygen get to our cells
Oxygen is carried by the haemoglobin in the red blood cells
Aerobic respiration
Takes place in ALL the living cells in the body as well as in most animal and plant
cells.
Anaerobic respiration
Some living things can get energy from food without using oxygen.
How to test for carbon dioxide
Limewater turns cloudy in the presence of carbon dioxide
Pharynx
The scientific name for the throat area
Trachea
The tube that leads to ur lungs
What keeps the trachea open
Rings of cartilage
Bronchus
Trachea divides our lungs to branch into each one, these two branches are called bronchi
Bronchioles
Spreads out through all our lungs the bronchi break up into even smaller branches
Alveoli
The final place the air we breathe in goes to in our lung is the ALVEOLI.
What’s gas exchange
In the alveoli Carbon dioxide is brought to the lungs to be exhaled and oxygen is brought to the body for respiration
Where did alveolus get their nickname
The Greek word meaning bunches of grapes
Rib cage
Our rib cage is around our lungs to protect them.
• When we take in air the rib cage seems to lift up to give more room for all the air.
