Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is respiration
A
A chemical reaction that occurs in cells to produce energy
2
Q
What is breathing
A
Breathing is inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide
3
Q
What is the energy used for in respiration
A
Movement Growth and repair Heat Reproduction Active transport
4
Q
What happens when we breathe in
A
Intercostal muscles contract Ribs move up and out Diaphragm muscles contract and move down Increase the volume in the chest cavity Pressure reduces Air is sucked into the lungs until the pressure is equal outside
5
Q
When we breathe out
A
Intercostal muscles relax Ribs move down and in Diaphragm replaces and returns to its dome shape Volume decreases Pressure increases Forcing the air out
6
Q
How is the respiratory surface adapted for gas exchange
A
Large surface area - alveoli
Thin and permeable walls
Moist - allows gases to dissolve easily
Good blood supply secure a diffusion gradient
7
Q
Anaerobic equation in humans
A
Glucose-> lactic acid + small amount of energy
8
Q
Anaerobic equation in yeast
A
Glucose-> ethanol + carbon dioxide + small amount of energy
