Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
The nitrogen cycle is
A series of reactions carried out by bacteria that change N2 gas to a usable form that plants can absorb.
Nitrogen fixation
Aerobic
Nitrogen fixing bacteria change nitrogen gas into nitrates which can be absorbed by plants and used for growth.
Usually takes place in root nodules or legumes eg peas, beans and clover.
Decay
Bacteria and fungi break down dead plants and animals to produce ammonia.
Excretion aswell.
Nitrification
Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to the useful product nitrate which can be absorbed by plants.
Denitrification
Denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates to nitrogen gas they work best in anaerobic conditions.
Tends to occur in waterlogged soils which have low oxygen levels
