Neurones Flashcards
How are neurones adapted to carry electrical impulses
Long - to carry impulses long distances
Insulating sheath - to allow very fast transmission of impulses
Branching ends - to receive or pass impulses to other nerve cells
What is a synapse
The tiny gaps between nerve cells. For impulses to pass across the synapse a chemical transmitter must diffuse across a synapse at a high enough concentration to trigger an impulse in the next neurone.
What is a voluntary action
One we have conscious control over ie moving your leg
What is a relax action
One in which we do not have conscious control of eg eye responding to light
Differences
Relax is faster, used for protection and uses a reflex arc
Name the three neurones involved in a reflex arc
