Respiration Flashcards
What are the two forms of respiration
aerobic and anaerobic
what is meant by aerobic
with oxygen
what is meant by anaerobic
without aerobic
What are the two things required for aerobic respiration
glucose and oxygen
What are the products of aerobic respiration
carbon, water and energy
What is energy used for in all living beings
Building amino acids
What is energy used for in animals
Movement
What is energy used for in mammals and birds
Producing/maintaining heat
What is energy used for in plants ( 2 )
1/ Taking sugars, nitrates and other nutrients and converting them into amino acids
2/ growth
As a person starts to run what two factors increase ( 2 )
1/ breathing rate
2/ heart rate
What does blood supply to cells and muscles
glucose and oxygen
What does blood supply to cells Why does heart rate increase ( 2 )
more glucose and oxygen is required by the muscles and more
What is glucose stored as in muscle
In glycogen form
What happens during exercise to glycogen
it is broken down
What is required for anaerobic respiration
glucose
What are the products of anaerobic respiration
lactic acid and a little energy
Why does anaerobic not produce as much energy
Energy is released throughout the process of respiration and most the process requires oxygen but the start doesn’t so aerobic respiration happens when there isnt enough oxygen to carry out the full process
What happens when lactic acid builds up ( 2 )
1/ Muscles become fatigued
2/ stop contracting efficiently
How is lactic acid removed
blood needs to flow through the muscle
what is oxidation
The oxidization of the lactic acid
What products are formed after lactic acid is removed
carbon dioxide and water
Why is there a long period of heavy breathing after exercise
Repaying oxygen debt
