Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration
The breakdown of organic compounds like glucose in the presence of oxygen to release energy for cellular functions
What is produced during respiration and how do we get rid of it
Carbon dioxide. Plants diffuse co2 into the air through stomata in leaves and stem. Animals exhale co2 out the body
What is required for respiration
Glucose and oxygen
How do plants and animals get glucose
Plants get glucose through photosynthesis
Animals get glucose through the food they eat. Absorbed from animals gut and transported to cells in need
How do plants and animals get oxygen
Air diffuses into plants through stomata in the stem and leaves
Animals absorb oxygen from blood, when we inhale, oxygen passes through the lung walls into the blood
What are the products of respiration
Energy water and carbon dioxide
How do plants and animals make energy
Both plants and animal cells use energy for metabolism (cellular functions)
How do plants and animals make water
Phil cells retain water and use it for a variety of cellular functions
How do plants and animals make carbon dioxide
Plants release carbon dioxide through this stomata and animals release carbon dioxide by diffusion out of the cells and into the blood
Where does respiration take place
In the mitochondria
How are organic compounds used
To supply the cells of auto troughs with energy
can also be stored
How do you cells release chemical energy
As animals eat compounds they’re digested and absorbed into the blood which takes him to cells. Cells and release chemical energy during respiration to metabolise
