What is a balanced diet?
The correct nutrients in the correct proportion for the body to function properly
Why are nutrients important?
They are required to carry out body functions, helps build parts of our bodies, helps repair damages in the body
What are deficiency diseases and why are the caused?
They are lack of proper nutrients in the diet. Ignorance and negligence, and poverty can cause these diseases
What are the six essential nutrients?
Water
Carbohydrates
Vitamins
Minerals
Proteins
Fats
What is malnutrition?
The supply of food is deficient in one or more essential nutrients needed by the body. It can result in poor development of healthy bones, muscles and tissues. Results in an imbalanced diet, over or under nutrition and bad eating habits
What are the different types of malnutrition?
Energy, mineral, protein, and vitamin malnutrition
Give me some information about vitamin deficiency.
Required by the buddy in very small quantities to maintain body functions. Can cause deficiency diseases if there is a lack. The fat soluble are vitamins A, D, E and K and they can be stored by the body
The water soluble are B and C and they are everyday vitamins
What is a vitamin A deficiency?
Causes night blindness if not enough and hypervitaminosis if too much. Protects if from viral infections
What is a vitamin D deficiency?
Build our bones, causes rickets if there is a deficiency
What is a vitamin E deficiency?
Protects us from cancer, cause neurological diseases if there’s a deficiency
What is a vitamin K deficiency?
Helps in clotting of blood or stops excessive bleeding when hurt. Will have intense bleeding if deficiency
What is a vitamin B deficiency?
Many groups of 12 vitamins. Keeps nerves strong and bones healthy
What is a vitamin C deficiency?
Prevents capillary fragility, protects us from viruses. Eat more fresh foods. Causes scurvy when there is a deficiency
What is mineral malnutrition?
Sodium, potassium and calcium. Eat more nuts and green leaves. Minerals help body perform function and causes several diseases if deficiency.
What is a calcium deficiency?
Eat more milk, eggs, meat. Leads to weak bones, teeth and bleeding gums. Needed for muscle contraction
