Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration and how does it release energy?
Respiration is a chemical reaction which releases energy from glucose with or without oxygen, the products of this reaction are also carbon dioxide and water
The energy is released in the form of ATP
What is the function of ATP?
To provide energy for cells
Examples include:
Mainting a constant body temperature
Cell division and growth
Active Transport
Muscular contractions
What are the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic requires oxygen, anaerobic does not
Aerobic produces alot of energy, anareobic produces little energy
Aerobic completely breaks down the glucose, anaerobic does it incompletely
The products differ
Aerobic will happen when there is abundant oxygen, anaerobic will happen when there is insufficient oxygen
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration in all living organisms?
Oxygen + Glucose –> Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration in all living organisms?
6O₂ + C₆H₁₂O₆ –> 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose —> Lactic acid
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and fungi?
Glucose —> Carbon dioxide + Ethanol
Outline an investigation into the release of carbon dioxide from respiration
Put 10 germinating seeds in one test tube, 10 dead seeds in another, and 10 glass beeds in another
Add hydrogencarbonate indicator to each test tube, and seal it off
Wait 3 hours, and then observe the colour of the indicator
The hydrogencarbonate in the tube with the germinating seeds should be yellow, as carbon dioxide was released, and in the other 2 test tubes it should be orange/red as there was no change in carbon dioxide concentration
Outline an investigation of heat release from respiration
Seal dead seeds, in one flask, and germinating seeds in another with thermometers in each
Record the initial temperature, and wait 4 days
Record the final temperature
You should see that the flask with the germinating seeds experienced a large temperature increase an respiration is an exothermic reaction but the other flask did not
