What are the functions of the respiratory system?
o Allows you to talk and smell.
o Warms air to match the body temperature and moisturizes it to the humidity level the body needs.
o Delivers oxygen to the cells in the body.
o Removes waste gases, including carbon dioxide, from the body when you exhale.
o Protects your airways from harmful substances and irritants.
What is the function of the sinuses?
Help regulate the temperature and humidity of the air you inhale.
What is the main function of the lungs?
To remove oxygen from the air and pass it into the blood.
What is the function of the diaphragm?
To help the lungs pull in air and push it out.
What happen when you breath out?
The blood carries carbon dioxide and other waste out of the body.
Where does the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide take place?
In the alveoli.
What are cilia?
Tiny hairs that move in a wave-like motion to filter dust and other irritants out of the airways
What is the function of the larynx?
Hollow organ that allows you to talk and make sounds when air moves in and out.
What are some disorders of the respiratory system?
Asthma, allergies, infections such as the flu and cold, aging, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs), bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchial
tubes).
How can you keep your respiratory system healthy?
o Avoid pollutants that can damage your airways,including secondhand smoke,chemicals,and radon(a radioactive gas that can cause cancer). Wear a mask if you are exposed to fumes, dust, or other types of pollutants for any reason.
o Don’t smoke.
o Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water to stay hydrated
o Exercise regularly to keep your lungs healthy.
o Preventinfectionsbywashingyourhandsoftenandgettingafluvaccineeachyear.
o Considerusinganairpurifierindoorstoreduceairpollutionfromdust,petdander,andchemicals.
