What is a cosmetic?
Cosmetic” is any substance used to clean, improve or change the complexion, skin, hair, nails
or teeth.
What are some examples of cosmetics
Cosmetics include beauty preparations (make-up, perfume, skin cream, nail polish) and
grooming aids (soap, shampoo, shaving cream, deodorant).
What is a cosmeceutical
Cosmeceuticals are products able to penetrate the epidermis. The active principles are
able to pass through the epidermis and act deep within the dermis.
What are some common active ingredients found in cosmeceuticals
Active ingredients most commonly found in cosmeceuticals are antioxidants such as retinol,
vitamins (B, C and E), coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid (ALA), hyaluronic acid and polyphenols,
peptides (stimulate collagen growth in the skin), natural botanical products (green tea, soybean,
aloe vera, etc.
What is an active ingredient?
Ingredients contained within skincare products that actually work to address the skin
concern the product is meant to target.
What does Hypoallergenic mean?
Ingredients that won’t cause allergies
What does non comedogenic mean?
That will not clog pores or cause comedones
What does anhydrous mean?
Products that do not contain any water.
What are some examples of anhydrous products?
Oils serum, lip balm.
What are emollients?
Ingredients that can act as either as vehicles or performance ingredient. Emollients are
lubricants.
What is a vehicle ingredient?
Ingredients that, help place, spread and keep agents on the skin.
What is an emulsifier?
Ingredients that keep oils and water blended in a product.
What is a good example of emulsion cleanser?
Make up remover.
What are hydrators and moisturizers
Ingredients that actually attract water to the skin’s surface. They can lock water on the skin
and improve the symptoms of dehydration
What are some common ingredients used in chemical exfoliation?
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) also include glycolic, lactic, malic,
tartaric, citric, and salicylic acids.
