Q

What is sustainable resource use

A

Using a resource in a way that allows the resource to late for a long time.

17
Q

How can resource sustainability be achieved

A

By using resources wisely and sparingly, and conserving what we have.

18
Q

What is unsustainable resource use

A

Humans using too much natural resources or wasting resources that we have to an extent that there will not be sufficient resources available for future generations.

19
Q

How can we move towards a wise use of resources

A

By recycling and reusing items and by advancement in certain technologies

20
Q

What are three ways resources can be used responsibly around your house

A
  • energy efficient lightbulbs
  • rain water collector
  • dual flush toilet
21
Q

What is the role of consumers in choosing more sustainable resource use (individuals)

A
  • Individuals can put pressure on businesses to operate in the least harmful way possible
  • only chose products that use minimal, recycled or reusable packaging
  • chose fresh produce that comes from farms that use sustainable farming methods
  • purchase eco friendly cleaning products which do not harm the environment
22
Q

What is the role of consumers in choosing more sustainable resource use (businesses)

A
  • remove unnecessary plastics from their packaging
  • use natural ingredients as far as possible
  • follow sustainable practices
23
Q

What is the role of consumers in choosing more sustainable resource use (governments)

A
  • Make choices for sustainable practices in their country
  • use renewable energy sources
  • provide recycling centres
  • introduce laws to make recycling a requirement
  • ban unhealthy and unsustainable products, chemicals, and processes
  • make it illegal for farmers to put hormones in their farming methods
24
Q

What is the role of science and technology in food security

A

People have access to
Larger quantities, greater varieties and more nutritional food than people had centuries ago. With the change in agriculture from being primarily subsistence to being commercial, food can can be produced on a much larger scale.

25
Q

What do they do in factory farming

A

They add vitamins to feed the animals so they won’t need to spend time outdoors or get exercise. They also inject the animals with hormones and antibiotics so they can grow quickly and not get sick. With chickens they only produce eggs during daytime so artificial light is used to trick their bodies into thinking it’s daylight therefore they produce more eggs.

26
Q

How does factory farming benefit farmers and factory owners

A

This had made it possible to keep a large number of animals for longer at a lower cost, increasing the profit for the farmers and factory owners

27
Q

Why are people against factory farming

A

Keeping animals confined indoors in small spaces is cruel. Injecting animals with hormones means that humans invest those hormones and it can be bad for our bodies.

28
Q

What are other words for GMOs

A

GMFs (genetically modified foods) and GMCs (genetically modified crops)

29
Q

What does GMO stand for

A

Genetically modified organisms

30
Q

What are the top 10 most genetically modified foods

A

Corn, soy, cotton, papaya, rice, rapeseed, potatoes, tomatoes, dairy products and peas
