Resistance to Social Influence Flashcards
Resistance to social influence
Ability of people to withstand social pressure to conform to majority or to obey.
Social support: conformity
Can help people resist conformity as the pressure to do so can be reduced if there are other people present who aren’t conforming. Shown in Ash’s study.
Social support: obedience
Can help people resist obedience if someone else is also disobeying. Shown in Milgrams as rate of obedience dropped when joined by disobeying confederate
Locus of Control
Sense we each have about what directs events in our lives.
Internals: believe they are responsible for what happens to them
Externals: Matter of luck or other outside forces
Locus of control: continuum
Isn’t just matter of simply being internal or external- high or low
Those with internal LOC more likely to resist pressures to conform or obey.
