Conformity: Asch's roles Flashcards
What did they do?
Judged lengths of lines
Procedure
Confederates deliberately gave wrong answers to see if participant would conform
Findings
Naive participants conformed in 36.8% of trials
25% never conformed
Variations
Conformity increased increased up to group size of 4
Dissenter reduced conformity
Conformity increased when task was harder
Evaluation
Child of its time Artificial situation and task Limited application of findings Findings only apply to certain situations Ethical issues
Other research
Jelly beans- Jenness
Group size
Asch increased size of group by adding more confederates which increased until it levelled off when majority was greater was 3
Unanimity
Extent to which all members of group agree, when majority agreed produced greater conformity in naive participants
Task difficulty
Line judging task more difficult when becomes harder to work out. Conformity increases as naive assumes majority to be right
