resistance to social influence Flashcards
what’s resistance to social influence
withstand social pressure to conform to the majority OR obey authority
what’s social support
resisting pressure to conform to obey, helps others do thr same. people who resist act as models, showing it is possible
social SUPPORT 1ST
social support and resisting conformity -
Asch found that pressure to conform can be reduced it other people who are present don’t conform. asch said someone else gives an answer that’s different from majority, (resist the majority) doesjf have to be right answer, makes other feel free to follow their own conscience, dropped from 33% to 5.5%. BREAKS UNANIMITY OF MAJORITY
this perosn acts as model, but it non conforming person starts conforming to majority so does the naive participant
2nd
SOCIAL SUPPRT ANF RESISTING OBEDIENCE
research shown that individuals are generally more confident and o resist temptation to obey if they can’t find an ally who is willing to join them. disobedient peers therefore act as role
models.
in milgrams study - obedience dropped from 65 to 10% when gununie participate was joined by disobedient confederate.
what’s locus of control
sense we have about what directs events in our lives. people differ in their belief about outcomes of actions are dependent
includes internal and external
internality meaning
they believe things happen to them because of their action
they are responsible for their behaviour and experience
eg if you do wel in exam it’s because you put work in
rely less on opinions, less need to social approval
externality
they believe things happen to them aren’t because of their action but because of luck, caused by events outside of their control.
eg they might blame teacher if they do bad on exam that they don’t teach properly
don’t take responsibility
internality and resistance to social influence
characteristics of internals that have relevance for resisting social influence :
1.high internals are active seekers of info that are useful to them, rely less on others opinions, less vulnerable to social influence
2nd point
high internals tend to achieve more, likely become leader then follow others.
SPECTOR foujd relationship exists brtweej locus of control and leadership style
3rd
high internals better able tp resist force from others,
strength for social support
evidence in real world
rosenstrasse protest - 2000 jewish prisoners were realeased after presence of disobedient peers gave courage and confidence to the group to stand up to authority
weak for social support
importance of response order
allen and levine studied whether response position of person providing social support made difference. A confederate answered first giving right answer while others gave same wrong answer the real participant always placed last
LOC Strength
research support
avtgis carried out meta analysis, this showed a significant positive correlation between LOC and social influence, high internals are less likely to be persuaded or influenced.
high internals likely to be persuaded or influenced
loc weak
locus of control is related to normative but not informational influence
