what’s minority influence
where one person or small group influences the beliefs and behaviour of others (change public and private beliefs)
WHEN MEMBERS OF MAJOIRTY GROUP CHAMGE THEIR BEIEFS OR BEHAVIOUR DUE TO EXPOSURE TO A PERSUASIVE MINORITY
what’s consistency
minority has to stick to their belief has to be consistent over time, and keep consisteny within the group so theres stability in the expressed position over time &
agreenment among different members of the minority
thers
commitment
minority have to show dedication to their cause, eg engaging in extreme activities to draw attention to their views, MAINLY PERSONAL RISK to demonstrate greater commitment
flexibility
a willingness to be flexible and to compromise when expressing a position, listen to view points of others. having a blanance
MUGNY suggest this is more effective, as minorities as powerless compared tp majority, they distinguished between rigid and flexible stules, arguing rufuses to compromise
moscovici study blue green slide study 1969.
each group had 4 naive participants and minority of 2 confederate, 172 women shown series of blue slides that varied in intensity and were asked if slides were blue or green. 2 CONFEDERATES kept saying blue slides were green. remaining 1/3 trials called slides blue
findings
naive participants said green on over 8% of trials.
after stidy was done, participants were asked to sort both colours out individually, to either blue or green section,3 was clearly from the green end and 3was ckearly from the blue end, said 24 were green and 12 were blue
group experiences and inconsistent minority(1.25%), suggesting initial influence was more at private than public level
limitation
moccovici used biased sample of 172 female participants from america
so unable to generalise, as it’s culture and gender bias, doesn’t generalise all population.
research shows female more likely to conform as they need social approval
strength
research evidence from MARTIN ET AL got deeper processing,
martin el al, one group heard minority group agree with view and another groip heard majority group agree.
