Research Methods- Types Of Reliability And Validity Flashcards
What is reliability?
Research should be designed/carried out in such a way that it can be replicated and achieve the same results. Refers to how consistently something is measured.
What is external reliability?
Consistent when assessed overtime or across different individuals.
What is test-retest reliability?
Assessing the same person on multiple different occasions.
What is inter-rater reliability?
External reliability calculated across individuals.
What is inter-observer reliability?
Agreement between 2 observers
What is validity?
Whether the observed effect is accurate and represents real life (external) or within a research context (internal).
What is concurrent validity? (Internal)
Extent to which a psychological measure relates to an existing similar measure and obtains close results.
What is face validity? (Internal)
At face value does the study/experiment measure what it is supposed to measure.
What is population validity? (External)
Extent to which study results from a sample can be generalised to a target population.
What is ecological validity? (External)
Examines whether results of the study can be generalised to real life settings.
What is temporal validity? (External)
Extent to which findings can be generalised to other time periods- usually from the past.
What is content validity? (External)
Extent to which the test/measure being used measures the exact thing you’re trying to investigate.
