Research Methods- Observations Flashcards
What are observations?
Data gathering techniques for an experiment
What is a naturalistic observation?
No environment manipulation, behaviour is free and natural in setting/context where target behaviour would usually occur.
What is a controlled observation?
Environment has been manipulated into a more structured setting- might be variables affecting behaviour.
What is a participant observation?
Researcher joins in and becomes part of the group to allow deeper understanding.
What is a non-participant observation?
Researcher observes from outside of the group/situation.
What is an overt observation?
Ptpts are aware they’re being observed.
What is a covert observation?
Ptpts unaware they’re being observed.
What is a structured observation?
Goes into observation with a set of specific things they’re looking to observe and tick off (produced quantitative)
What is an unstructured observation?
Goes into observation without any clear criteria to be specifically looked for(produces qualitative)
How is a data collection grid composed?
- Decide behaviours to be observed
- Ensure operationalised
- Need to be measurable and observable
