What is deception and how can it be overcome?
Deliberately misleading or withholding information from ptpts at any stage of an investigation.
-debriefing: ptpts made aware of aims and purpose of data.
-right to withdraw: can pull out/withhold data
-retrospective consent: ptpts asked for consent during debrief
What is/ what are the types of informed consent and how can it be overcome?
Making ptpts aware of the aims/ procedure/ their rights/purpose of data
Presumptive- researcher assumes consent
Prior general- asks for permission to use deception
Retrospective- ask during debrief
-consent letter: contains all info, ptpts/parents sign
What is protection from harm and how can it be overcome?
Ptpts need to be put in no more physical/psychological harm than they usually would be in their daily lives.
-debriefing: offer help if harm is caused e.g. therapy
-right to withdraw
-retrospective consent
What is privacy/confidentiality and how can it be overcome?
Ptpts have the right to control information about themselves.
-protect personal data: keep records protected or don’t keep records at all
-anonymity: use pseudonyms/initials when mentioning ptpts.
