Research Methods- Sampling Flashcards
1
Q
What is sampling bias?
A
If studies do not obtain a representative sample.
2
Q
What is random sampling and how do you conduct it?
A
All members have an equal chance of being selected.
1. Obtain list of members
2. Assign them each a number
3. Pick sample using a lottery method
3
Q
How is opportunity sampling conducted?
A
- Researcher offers the opportunity to take part in their study in a location where target population would usually be found.
- Sample is formed from people who agree to take part.
4
Q
How is volunteer sampling conducted?
A
- Advert is placed for ptpts to volunteer themselves
- Sample is formed from volunteers
5
Q
How is systematic sampling conducted?
A
- Make an alphabetical list of ptpts
- Select every nth person to be in the sample
6
Q
How is stratified sampling conducted?
A
- Researcher identifies strata that make up target population
- Proportions of different individuals are worked out using formula:
Sample size over population size X subgroup size - Ptpts making up each stratum randomly selected
