Research Methods Social Flashcards
What is random sampling
Every member of a target population has an equal chance of being selected
Whats a strength of random sampling
Less likely to be a biased sample
This increases chances of representative sample
Weakness of random sampling
Takes more time and effort
What is stratified sample
Sample contains a proportional representation of the target population
Determine strata for population demographic across a place I.e 10% black people
Select ppts to meet each strata > 10 black ppl
Strength of stratified
Most representative subgroups are in right proportions as the target population
Weakness of stratified
Very lengthy and hard to find subgroups willing to take part
Bias due to categorisation
Volunteers sample
Asking people who are willing to take part via leaflet
Strength of volunteers sampling
People are less likely to leave
Weakness for volunteering sampling
Sample is more likely to be biased as volunteers are likely to be motivated
What is opportunity sampling
Ppl who are easily available at the time of the study
Strength of opportunity sampling
Most convenient
Weakness of opportunity sampling
Inevitably more biased share same belief as researcher
What is a structured interview
Strength and weakness
Structured interview asks the exact same question in the same order to every participants
S: consistency and comparison
W: limited depth
What is a unstructured interview
Strength and weakness
Informal and flexible form
Freedom to explore different topics
S depth and flexibility
W lack of comparability
Strength of structured interview
Highly consistent and comparable
As they are asked the same question about (apply to question)
Weakness of structured interview
Limited depth
Can’t explore topic in depth and understand why the ppts feels that way about ( apply to question)
Strength of unstructured
High depths
Can ask follow up questions and understand why the students feels that way about ( apply to question)
Weakness of unstructured
Lack of comparability
Semi structure interview
Blend of structured and unstructured combines both open-ended and close-ended questions
Strength and weakness of semi structured
Same as unstructured
Flexibility to ask follow up questions
Difficult to compare
Closed questions
Strength
Weakness
Questions that can only by answered with yes or no
Quick to answer
Very comparable
Limited depth
Doesn’t reflect a person’s actual feelings
Open question
Strength
Weakness.
Questions that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no
Provides deep understanding
More insight
Low of time
Harder to compare
Ranked scale questions
Strength
Weakness
Rank order on most likely to less likely
Easy to understand
Comparative analysis of quantitative data
Limited information
Too vague
Thematic analysis
Observations-gets quote from ppts via interview
Generates codes-identify ideas from the quotes that are gotten
Generates a theme
Develop change theme
