Extraneous variable (EV)
Any variable other than IV that might have impacted the DV if it not controlled.
Confounding variables
Any variable other than IV that may have impacted the DV.
Cannot be sure of the sources. Vary systematically with the IV
Demand characteristics
Any cue from the researcher that may be interpreted by the participant as revealing the purpose of the investigation
Investigator effects
Any effect of the investigators behaviour on the researcher (eg. design of the study to the selection of, interaction with participants during the process.
Randomisation
The use of chance in order to control for effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of conditions
Standardisation
Using same formalised procedures and instructions for all participants in the study
