Research methods- Correlations Flashcards
What is a correlation?
A correlation is the association between two variables.
What are the two variables called?
CO-VARIABLES
What is the graph we would use to show a correlation?
Scattergram
In what case would we see a positive correlation?
If we see an increase in both variables. (The more this happened, The more this happened).
In what case would we see a negative correlation?
As one variable increases the other decreases. (The more this happened, the less this happened).
In what case would we see a zero correlation?
If the two variables have no correlation at all.
What is a correlation co-efficient?
Tells us how strong (+) or weak (-) a correlation is.
What are the 2 strengths of using correlational research?
It is a starting point as it allows you to see if there is a link between 2 things before you commit into research.
It is quick and economical, it takes littles time and it cheap to run.
What are the 2 weaknesses of using correlational research?
The direction of causation, you don’t know what factor is effecting which, it could be either way round, therefore you can’t say for sure what is effecting what.
The third variable effect, this is the chance of there being a third reason as to why the 2 variables have a link.
