Biopsych Flashcards
Define ‘Nervous system’
- A specialised network of cells in the human body
- Primary internal communication system
Collects and processes information from the environment
-Coordinates all organs and cells
What are the two main components in the Nervous system?
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
Define ‘Central Nervous system’
The origin of all complex demands and descions
What are the 2 main parts of the CNS?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
Where is the cerebral cortex?
Outer layer of the brain
What is the spinal cord?
- An extension of the brain, that is responsible for all reflex actions
Define ‘peripheral nervous system’
- The system that sends information to the CNS from the outside world.
- Transmits messages from CNS to muscles and glands
What are the 2 main components of the PNS?
- Somatic
- Autonomic
Define ‘somatic nervous system’
- Transmits information from the receptor cells in sense organs to the CNS
- Recieves information from CNS and then directs muscles
Define ‘autonomic nervous system’
- Transmits info to and from the internal bodily organs
- Involuntarily
What are the two parts of the autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
What are the jobs of the sympathetic nervous system?
- Calm and restore
- Rest and Digest
Whats the job of the sympathetic nervous system?
- Relays the emergency response
Define ‘endocrine system’
- One of the bodies major information systems that instructs glands to release hormones directly to the blood stream
- They are carried towards target organs in the body
Define ‘gland’
- An organs in the body that synthesises substances like hormones/
