Research methods Flashcards
What is the definition of time sampling?
Observing and recording the behavior which happens art given points in time.
What is the definition of event sampling?
Observing and recording each time a particular behavior occurs.
What does the observational method include?
Clear aim and a hypothesis.
Focuses on specific behaviors and events.
Follows an objective system.
Why is the observational method used?
To find out how people behave.
As a technique for data collection.
What are the different types of observation?
Naturalistic Controlled Participant Non-participant Overt Covert Structured Unstructured
What is the difference between the aim and the hypothesis?
The aim is the purpose of the study
The hypothesis is the prediction of the study
What is a directional hypothesis?
Predicts the specific direction of the results
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
Predicts a difference and suggests that one variable will affect another
What is the definition of a null hypothesis?
No significant relationship
What is an independent variable?
Variable which the experimenter manipulates and changes
What is a dependant variable?
One which the experimenter measures
What is a confounding variable?
When the extraneous variables influence the dependant variable
What are the extraneous variable?
Any variable other than the independent variable that can affect other variables
What is an operalisation variable?
Shows how variables will be measured and allows us to see how we define and measure variables
What are the 4 experimental methods?
