RESEARCH METHODS - 1.6 Hypotheses and Aims Flashcards
Define Aim
This is a statement that tells you the purpose of the study
Define Hypothesis
A testable statement that predicts the difference between the levels of IV in study or the relationship between variables of correlation
Define an Alternative Hypothesis
Testable statement predicting the difference / relationship between variables in a certain study
What are the 3 different types of hypotheses?
- Directional (one-tailed) hypothesis
- Non-Directional (two-tailed) hypothesis
- Null hypothesis
Define the Directional (one-tailed) Hypothesis
A statement that predicts the direction on the relationship between variables
Define the Non-Directional (two-tailed) Hypothesis
Predicting statement where only one variable will be related to the other, not the direction of the relationship
Define a Null Hypothesis
Testable statement that states any difference of correlation in the results is due to chance
