RESEARCH METHODS - 1.1 Experiments Flashcards
Learn vocabulary on Experiments
Define an experiment
This is an investigation that is looking for a casual relationship where an independent variable (IV) is manipulated and is then expected to be responsible for changes in the dependent variable (DV).
What are the three types of experiments?
- Laboratory experiment
- Field experiment
- Natural experiment
Define a Laboratory Experiment
A research method where there are an IV, DV and strict controls. It seeks a casual relationship and is conducted in an unusual environment for the participant, in relation to their behaviour.
Define a Field Experiment
A research method that is conduct in a usual environment for the participant, in regard to their behaviour. There are only a few variables the researcher has control over, since it is very difficult to control all variables.
Define a Natural Experiment
Research method seeking a casual relationship where the IV can not be directly manipulated by the experimenter. Thereby, experimenter studies the effect of an existing difference or change. This is not a true experiment as levels of IV can not be manipulated by experimenter.
Define an Experimental Condition
One or more of the situations in an experiment that represents the different IV levels that are then compared with one another/ with the control condition.
Define a Control Condition
A situation where the IV is absent. The control condition is compared to the experimental condition(s).
