Research Methods Flashcards
What is a lavatory experiment?
An environmental controlled laboratory experiment which excluded independent variable
What are the strengths of a laboratory experiment?
High internal validity and high internal reliability
What are the weaknesses of a laboratory experiment?
Low ecological validity, and a chance of demand characteristics, and investigator effects
What is a field experiment?
A natural environment where independant variable is excluded
What are the strengths of field experiment?
High ecological validity and lower demand characteristics
What are the weaknesses of a field experiment?
Low internal validity and low internal reliablity
What is a natural experiment?
Where the independant variable is naturally occuring
What are the strengths of a natural experiment?
Useful and has high ecological validity
What are the weaknesses of a natural experiment?
Low internal validity and no random allocation of PPs
What is a Quasi experiment?
Where the independant variable exists
What is repeated measures?
Where each pp does both conditions
What are the 2 strengths for a repeated measures experimental design?
No pps variables and less pps needed
What are the 2 weaknesses for a repeated measures experimental design?
Risk of order effects and increased chance of demand characteristics
What is an independant group experimental design?
Where different pps are randomly allocated to 1 or other condition
What are the 2 strengths for a independant group experimental design?
No order effects and reduced demand characteristics
What are the 2 weaknesses for a independant group experimental design?
No control of pps variables and more pps neeed
What is matched pairs experimental design?
Where each pp is matched and variables considered to be relevant to the investigation with another pp
What are the 2 strengths for a match pairs experimental design?
No order effects, reduced demand characteristics, and control of pp variables
What are the 2 weaknesses of a matched Pairs experimental design?
Matching pairs of pps may be time-consuming and difficult and large number of pps needed to achieve matching
What is naturalistic observation?
Where an individual watches and records natural occurring behaviour
What is a controlled observation?
Where an individual watches and records behaviour where the researcher tries to control certain variables
What are the strengths for a naturalistic observation?
High ecological validity and no demand characteristics
