Research Methods 📠 Flashcards
What are the steps of carrying out a research method ?
- Review existing literature
- Develop aims , questions and hypothesis
- Carry out pilot study
- Collect sample
- Analyses data
6.evaluate research
Why do we have researcher aims ?
To keep a clear focus and keep the researcher on task
What is a positive of carrying out a literature review?
Researcher becomes familiar with subject/ key concept
What is positivism ?
Sociologist/ researchers that believe the best way to view/ understand society is through science and stats
What is interpretism?
People who believe the best way to understand society is through the observations of behaviour- looking it the eyes of the participant
What is triangulation?
The cross check of findings from qualitative data against quantitative data
What is the mixed methods approach ?
When you use qualitative and quantitative data to get the most data possible
What is a pilot study?
Small trial run to cheap if methods will generate the desired data
How are samples selected?
Through selecting it from a sampling frame - boys or girls
What are the three probability sampling techniques?
Stratified- one characteristic eg female or age
Simple random- computer generated
Systematic- nth person
What are the three non-probability sampling techniques?
Snowball- when an interviewee gets another interviewee that they think would benefit to the research
Quota- specific number of people with different characteristics
Purposive - selecting people due to characteristics
