Research Methods (1) Flashcards
What is quantitative data?
Quantitative data is data involving stats and numbers
What is qualitative data?
Qualitative data is based on opinions and observations
What are the self-report methods?
- Social desirability
- Validity
- Reliability
- Demand characteristics
Define Demand characteristics
Demand characteristics - behaviour due to expectations and situations - as a student being quiet in class against laughing at pantomime
Define Reliability
Reliability - consistency of measurements - an interview that is the same for all participants
Define Validity
Validity - are you testing what you think your testing - are the answers legit
Define Social desirability
Social desirability - responding to questions in a way that presents you to be as good as you can be (e.g if your asked how often you exercise)
What are the types of questions in surveys?
- Closed questions
- Open questions
- Contingent questions
- Likert scales
- Structured interview
- Semi-structured interview
What are closed questions?
Closed questions - set answers to choose from - a fixed number of possible answers (must write yes or no in exam)
What are open questions?
Open questions - participants write whatever
What are Contingent questions?
Contingent questions - a question that is answered only if the respondent gives a particular response to a previous question.
What are Likert scales?
Likert scales - scale of 1-10
What is a structured interview?
Structured interview - questions standardised
What is an unstructured interview?
Unstructured interview - questions unstandardised - not decided in advance
