Bandura 1961-1965 (4) Flashcards
What happened in Bandura’s experiments? (1961)
- Put an adult and child in a room with the doll
- Made the adult beat up the doll with weapons and shouting
- Child mirrored the adult
- An adult played gently with the doll
- The child played gently with the doll
What groups were the children split into in Bandura’s experiment? (1961)
Aggression Group - would watch an adult model attack, punch and kick the doll
Non-aggressive group - non-aggressive adult would demonstrate caring behaviour with Bobo doll
Control group - would not get a model and would play as they wanted
Weakness of Bandura’s (1961) Experiment: Setting
A weakness of Banduras 1961 study was that it was done in a lab and the situation involved in the task was very different from in a real nursery. This means the experiment lacks external validity and cannot be generalised outside the lab
Strengths of Bandura’s (1961) Experiment: Application
The findings of the study will show parents to monitor the influences on their children such as movies, videogames and their own behaviour. The study led to the implementation of age ratings on video games
Strength of Bandura’s (1961) Experiment: Design
A strength of the study was its high internal validity due to its design. Children were matched to controls and any children with abnormal behaviour were not used. Each child was observed one at a time to allow the most accurate observation.
Findings of Bandura’s (1961) Experiment
Children who witnessed aggressive behaviour were more likely to be aggressive and those with passive models had much less aggressive behaviour. It was also found boys were more likely to imitate their role model if it was a male as well.
Conclusions of Bandura’s (1961) Experiment
Social behaviour such as aggression can be picked up through a role model or just through observation.
Procedure of Bandura’s (1961) Experiment
- Children were split into aggression group/calm group and control
- they observed the model designated to them
- children observed new toys and were then told they weren’t for them
- children were taken to their own playroom where they could do what they wanted and would be observed.
What happened in Bandura’s 1963 experiment
Bandura compaired different models in the form of tv violence, a violent adult and cartoon violence along with a control group. The procedure was then the same as the original study.
What happened in Bandura’s 1965 experiment
The children would observe 1 of 3 situations:
- an adult praise a model for being aggressive behaviour
- an adult would tell off an aggressive model
- no consequence for aggression
What was found in Bandura’s 1965 experiment
Children who witnessed punishment were much less aggressive and those who witnessed reward were more aggressive
