Research Flashcards
Types of research (4)
Experimental
Quasi-experimental
Correlational studies
Longitudinal
Experimental (3)
Independent and dependent variables (2 groups is enough, control not needed)
May have a control (if yes, then experimental)
random assignment!!
Quasi-experimental
A variable is manipulated but research lacks control/two groups or random assignment
Correlational studies
Looks at a couple of variables and see how they’re related. No manipulation.
ex: sun exposure and mood
Longitudinal studies
Correlational, measuring variables over time. Multiple assessments over time.
ex: sun exposure + mood, over the span of different seasons
How does research design impact internal and external validity?
More control in research design -> greater internal validity and less external validity
External validity
is it generalizable to the general population?
Internal validity
Is it researching what it aims to measure?
Confounding variables
important to note in non-experimental designs
aka covariates, third variables
