Child & Family Therapy Flashcards
Systems Theory
Family is observed and treated as one system.
A system is more than the sum of its parts, and expresses synergy and emergent bx.
Structural Family Therapy
Focus is on family hierarchy.
Therapist “joins” family to disrupt/restructure family patterns in hierarchy (often tx works in the home).
Genogram is not shared with the family.
Keywords: enmeshment (diffused personal boundaries), coalition (dysfunctional alliances between 2+ family members against another member), disengagement
Interventions
- enmeshment: tx helps family members create and express healthy boundaries, reflect on own wants and needs
Bowen Family Therapy
Focus is on intergenerational transmission.
Genogram is made alongside with family.
Keywords: intergenerational transmission process, triangles, emotional cutoff
Interventions:
Parenting Styles
Authoritative
Authoritarian
Permissive
Attachment Styles
Secure
Anxious
Dismissive
Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics
Interventions must take place from the bottom up (neurodevelopment) and be appropriate for developmental age
Family Life Cycle
Stages that a family passes through. The life cycle of the family as a whole as it continues through generations.
