3 components of interpersonal learning (Yalom)
- Importance of interpersonal relationships: Yalom believed that most problems can be defined in interpersonal terms.
- Corrective emotional experiences & cognitive reframing
- The social microcosm: each group will develop its own dynamics and patterns will emerge
2 important components of change that can be incorporated into any group
Here and now
- what the ct is experiencing right now
- how the ct is responding to the leader and other participants
- recent events that may affect how the ct feels right now
Process
1. recognize own bx in relation to others
2. appreciate impact of own bx on self and others
3. desire to change
4. enact change in group and then in life
Basic structure of group
First session: obtained informed consent, ground rules, introduction, brief explanation of group, pyschoeducation.
Subsequent sessions: specific interventions, homework
Final session: reflect on growth, party

Educational/psychoeducational (parenting skills, diabetes mgmt)
Support groups: leader steps back
Therapy groups
Self-Help (AA): no official leader
