Required Practical: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Why do we use an LED?
Minimal thermal energy dissipated so less risk of heat changing the temperature of the reaction and therefore the rate of photosynthesis.
What can we use if we only have a normal lamp?
a water bath between the lamp and the test tube would absorb the thermal energy whilst still allowing the light through
- fill a test tube with ______________________ solution which contains CO2 used in photosynthesis
sodium hydrogen carbonate
- place a piece of a pondweed into the boiling tube with the…
cut end at the top
- leave the pondweed for 5 mins to….
acclimatise to the conditions in the boiling tube
- after 5 mins, one can observe bubbles of gas (X2) released, which shows that
O2
photosynthesis is taking place
- start a stopwatch once you see bubbles forming and…
count bubbles released per minute. Do this three times and take a mean.
- repeat all steps but each time put the test tube …
10cm further than the light source
CONS of this practical
- the number of bubbles can be too fast to count accurately
- the bubbles are not always the same size
Alternative more accurate way:
instead of counting bubbles, catch bubbles in a funnel and then into a measuring cylinder, then use this to measure the exact volume of oxygen produced.
inverse-square-law equation
light intensity = 1/d^2
