Homeostasis and Response - The Endocrine System overview Flashcards
The endocrine system is made up of _________ that are situated throughout the body which ________ ___________, that are chemical messengers that spread throughout the body through the ____________
glands
secrete
hormones
bloodstream
What is the master gland and what hormone does it produce?
THE PITUITARY GLAND is known as the master gland as it produces multiple hormones which also tell other glands to release their hormones.
It is attached to the brain
Produces TSH which tells the thyroid glands to produce more thyroxine
Where is the pituitary gland found?
attached to the brain
Which gland produces the hormone that regulates metabolic rates?
thyroid gland produces thyroxine
What does the thyroid gland produce?
thyroxine - regulates rate of metabolism
Where is the adrenal gland found and what hormone does it produce?
Found in the kidneys and produce adrenaline which stimulates the fight or flight response with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
What gland is also considered an organ, and what hormone does it produce?
Pancreas produces insulin
What are the names of the glands that produce gametes in men and women, and what sex hormone do they produce?
testes - sperm - testosterone
ovaries - egg cells - oestrogen
Differences between endocrine and nervous system:
Endocrine:
- relies on hormones and glands
- transported by bloodstream
- spread more slowly over a period of time and last longer
Nervous:
- electrical impulses
- very fast
- effects don’t last long
