Required Practical - making soluble salts Flashcards
1
Q
describe a method to make a soluble salt by using an acid
( example of copper oxide and sulfuric acid)
A
equipment:
- bunsen burner
- beaker
-gauze
-tripod
-heatproof mat
method:
- start with a fixed amount of dilute sulfuric acid ( this is the limiting reactant)
- gently heat acid until almost boiling BUT DONT BOIL otherwise it will bubble over when you add the other reactant
- use a spatula to add small amounts of copper oxide to the acid
- stir the solution with a glass rod
- the copper oxide will react and seem to disappear and the solution will turn blue in colour ( the colour of copper sulfate)
- keep putting copper oxide if solution is still clear blue
- stop adding copper oxide if some powder remains after stirring - atp the reaction has stopped as all of the acid has reacted
- use filtration to remove any unreacted copper oxide
- place the copper sulfate solution in the evaporating basin and heat gently over a beaker of boiling water - heats until half of the solution remains
- leave solution in a cool place for 24 hours for cystals to form
- scrape crystals onto paper towel and gently pat dry
