Chemical changes Flashcards
how are the parts of the reactivity series ordered in terms of being extracted
potassium
lithium
sodium
calcium
magnesium
aluminium
carbon
zinc
iron
tin
lead
hydrogen
copper
Silver
gold
potassium -aluminium = extracted by electrolysis as more reactive than carbon
zinc-lead extracted by reduction of carbon and they are least reactive than carbon
copper - gold = very unreactive and found in native state
what is the reaction of water like with the metals in reactivity series.
potassium
lithium
sodium
calcium
magnesium
aluminium
carbon
zinc
iron
tin
lead
hydrogen
copper
silver
gold
potassium - calcium = potassium = violent
lithium = very quick
sodium = quick
calcium = slower but still quick
BUT FORM HYDROGEN AND METAL HYDROXIDE.
eg potassium + water - potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
but from magnesium to copper = will not react
what is the reaction with dilute acids and the metals in the reactivity series
potassium
lithium
sodium
calcium
magnesium
aluminium
carbon
zebra
iron
tin
lead
hydrogen
copper
Silver
gold
potassium - lithium = react very violently and fast
calcium = extremely vigorous reaction
magnesium = rapid reaction
zinc = quite a rapid reaction
iron = quite slow
copper = no reaction
BUT CALCIUM - IRON = FORMS HYDROGEN + SALT SOLUTION
what is the half equation for the reaction of aluminium oxide at the cathode
AL^3+ + 3E- -> AL
what is the half equation for the reaction of aluminium oxide at the anode
20^2- - 4e- –> 02
