ceramic and composites Flashcards
what are the two types of ceramics
glass , clay ceramics
what is the name of most of the glass that is used
soda - lime glass
what are ideal uses of soda - lime glass
windows
bottle
how is soda lime glass made
- mix together sand , sodium carbonate and limestone
- heat mixture in furnace till it melts
- when it cools it soldifies into any shape
what is an issue with soda lime glass
- has relatively low melting point = limits its uses
what is borosillicate glass
- a type of glass that has a higher melting point than soda lime glass = makes it useful for objects that require heating eg labware / kitchenware
how is boroscillicate glass made
by melting a mixture of sand and boron trioxide
what are examples of uses of clay ceramics
- pottery
- bricks
where is clay found
- it is a mineral found in the ground
how is clay made
- when clay is wet , it can be shaped and heated in a furnace to harden
how are most composites made
by combining two different materials - the reinforcement ( which consists of fibres or fragments of a material ) - the reinforcement is surrounded by a matrix / binder material
what is a key feature of composites
- they have different properties to the materials in them
what are the porperties in carbon fibre composites
- it is very strong and light = useful in cars / aircraft parts
what are the types of composites
- reinforced concrete
- carbon fibre composite
what is the porperty of reinforced concrete
- it is extremely strong = used to make buildings
